Welcome to the Mukwonago High School Boys Golf Team. If you are reading this you have made the first step in becoming a better player. Playing high school golf is a choice and a privilege. It is not a required school activity. You will be expected to dedicate yourself to your game and to your team seven days a week.

Tryouts

Tryouts for varsity and JV teams will be scheduled at different times than the freshman team. Varsity and JV tryouts will be the last week in March. Players are expected to be ready to play on the first day of practice. Tryouts for the varsity and JV teams will consist of four 9-hole rounds of golf. A swing evaluation and course play evaluation along with your average for the four 9-hole rounds will place you in a ladder. Cuts will be made according to that ladder. Team numbers may very depending on how many players tryout, to see who makes the team. Freshman tryouts are run the same way with the exception of rounds. Freshman will play three 9-hole rounds for average. Freshman tryouts are scheduled the week after the varsity and JV teams.

There is a tryout fee of $35.00 to cover your rounds of golf. We have to pay the course to play.

MHS Athletic Code

Athletes are reminded that they are to follow all the rules of the athletic code. Violations of that code will result in suspensions from play. Please read the athletic code in your student handbook.

“Playing great golf is much more than developing solid fundamentals and sound technique. It’s about keeping everything in perspective”.

-Tiger Woods-

Course Dress Code

All practices and meets require the players to follow a dress code. No jeans, cutoffs or bagger shorts. Collared shirts must be worn at all times while on the course. No equipment or clothing with drugs, alcohol, rock bands or improper words written on your equipment or clothing. As required by Rainbow Springs Golf Club players must always wear collared shirts and slacks. (no jeans). This will be enforced by the coaching staff and Rainbow Springs staff.

Parents

As a member of the Mukwonago High School Boys Golf Program players are expected to be hard working and positive members of the team. In school and in the community they are expected to represent themselves as a student, a young adult and as an athlete. All members of the golf team must abide by the MHS Athletic Code. (see handbook)

Parents are asked to be supportive of all players and the coaching staff. There are times when you, as a parent, have a disagreement with the determination of roles. It is that time parents need to discuss the matter with the coaches in an appropriate place and at an appropriate time. Parents please try not to discuss your frustrations with your son because it seems to filter into our team attitude. We try very hard to instill positive attitude, team bond and confidence in each individual.

Parents are “Welcome” to attend meets and tournaments. There are course rules to follow set up by the WIAA on spectators. Each player will get a breakdown on those rules.

Practices

  • Players are expected to be on time for practices and dressed appropriately as set up by our team dress code
  • An excused absence from practice must be school related or a medical situation. It is each player’s responsibility to report to their coach if they are to miss.
  • Players are expected to follow all rules for practice and course rules set up by their coach and the Director of Golf at Rainbow Springs Golf Club

Meets

Keep in mind that all players are representing their team, their school, their family and their community at all times. Players are to wear the appropriate dress for meets and tournaments. Our conference dress code is strict. As a coaching staff, we want our players to look like a team and dress like a golfer. Team captains decide on what is to be worn to meets and tournaments. We have a list attached on what a player needs to have for practice, for meets and bad weather. Please read the list.

Fundraisers

Because our schools golf budget is very small we as a team have a fundraiser every season for our team fund. The team fund is used to buy shirts and tops and balls. Sometimes we get team bags. These items are kept at the end of the year by the player. We also use the monies for practice rounds for post season tournaments and end of the year banquet. I know all parents dislike fundraisers but it is the only thing that works. We also offer deals on tryout fees if a player sells a certain amount of fundraising items. All money goes back to the team for that season.

What Kind Of Golfer Are You?

As you read this, first you want to ask yourself, “What kind of Golfer am I”? Are you the type of player that has a strong work ethic and a determined drive to get better everyday you step onto the golf course? Or, are you the type of golfer that just wants to,”play golf” and doesn’t want to work hard to get to the next level. This is a very important question because this is the beginning of your mind set and your value to the team and where you will play on this team. I have had great players fail and average players succeed. The season is a short one of basically nine weeks. You have to come into the season ready to work hard and the attitude to get better. There is no time to waste as practices become few during the season because of the schedule we keep. Dedication and focus is demanded of you. There is no time to slide. Making the same mistakes on the course through the entire season is a disappointment. Those mistakes stand out as to how hard you are working. The ones that work hard stand out at the end of the season and the players that don’t, get left behind. I could tell you many stories of how a player or a team has lost a trip to the state tournament by one or two strokes. It is the worst feeling that stays with you for a long time. It usually happens that a player has a thinking breakdown on the course were that player could have saved a few strokes but because of anger or loss of focus, the player wasted strokes. It happens all the time. We don’t want to be that team or player. There is no room for anger in this game. Being smart and full of confidence will get you the scores. If you believe this and work on this, you will get the chance to be there in Madison at the end of the season.

As a coaching staff we will work our hardest to develop each player and give them every opportunity to perform as long as they are willing to work hard and practice hard. Each player is expected to communicate with the coaching staff on their game and weaknesses on the course. Respect for your coaches, your teammates and your captains, will always bond a successful team and season.
